The class will be held in late Summer/Early Fall, with 1 review course in July. The review course will be limited in size. All dates are still tentative at this point. The cost will be $175.

Orientation, Wed, July 2nd, 7pm: Overview of TLCS, skills review signup

Students must attend the skills review session. The review will consist of a Wednesday night of lectures and rappelling at the CMC, along with a Saturday of hands-on skills review at Rockn' & Jamn' I in Thornton. Everything in the review will be posted in the skills section of this website, and we are asking students to read through this material to help the review session go smoothly.

Students may be dismissed from the school at the discretion of the directors. Students who participate in the Skills Review Seminar and do not continue with the rest of the course will be refunded $125. No refunds will be given to students who participate in the school after the Skills Review Seminar.

Skills Review Session July 9th & 12th

4 mandatory field trips, scheduled per group between August 9th and late September. The dates for these trips will depend on the number of students in the class, any trip may have to be rescheduled due to weather. We will work with each group to pick field trip dates. Please be as flexible as possible and try to keep your weekend calendar clean in August and September if you plan to take the course.

Each trip will have at least 2 instructors and up to 4 students

• Trip 1 - Table Mountain or similar crag.
  • Gear overview
  • Rack organization
  • Gear placement of each piece of gear
  • Multi-directional placements
  • Making belay stations on a ledge, on the ground, hanging
  • Top-rope anchors
  • Falling on lead exercise
  • Tying off a fallen climber

• Trip 2
  • Make top-rope anchors
  • Simulated leading (leading with a backup top-rope belay)
  • Lead climbing the routes you simulated
  • Instructors will climb after you to critique your gear placements
  • More belay stations

• Trip 3
  • Multi-pitch leading to include meandering routes
  • Students will lead all pitches and instructors will follow to evaluate gear placements

• Grad Climb
  • Graduation climb: More multi-pitch climbing, likely a long single route

Skills Review Session:

6:00pm, Wednesday (July 9th) at the CMC in Golden

• Lecture on belay communication
• Lecture on rappelling
• Rappel practice at the CMC wall
• Anchor cleaning
• Knots review

9:00am, Saturday (July 12th) at Rockn' & Jamn' I in Thornton

• Lead belay - [The students that haven't climbed at R&J must first pass the lead belay test required by the gym. We will allow time for this. However, if all of the students have taken the lead belay/lead climbing test prior to Saturday morning, the session will go much smoother.]
  • belay using standard communication
  • communicate using rope tug signals
  • belay an instructor climbing swiftly while maintaining appropriate slack
• Catch a leader fall - An instructor will lead the 5.10- route on the cave wall up to the anchor bolts, then drop on the previous bolt. Students will take turns catching the fall using a dynamic belay (we'll demonstrate how.) An instructor will backup the catch by holding the rope about 10 feet downstream.
• Demonstrate climbing ability on 4 or 5 top-rope climbs (5.9 grade)
• Rope manipulation skills - switch brake hand grip, change belayers, put on a rain jacket while belaying
• Set up a rappel station backup
• Ascend a rope using prusik knots on a single strand with a top-rope belay (and the auto-belay as a backup) - Demonstrate that you can safely ascend past a section of the climb that is too difficult to follow while communicating with the belayer.
